To begin designing a human resources management system, or human resources information system, for any organization it is important to understand what a human resources system will be required to do. So, what is a human resource management system and what does it do? A human resource management information system, sometimes referred to as HRMS, is software application that integrates many different human resources functions. A great HRMS application supplies an easy to use user interface for conducting human resources functions as well as creating, maintaining, manipulating, and outputting relevant information related to human resources. This information is vital when making HR decisions at Riordan Manufacturing. The ideal HR system would include components for handling planning and appraisal, training and development, hiring, career planning, career pathing, succession planning, job design, classification, and compensation and rewards (Basic Elements of HR Practices. n.d.). The system must also be capable of integrating with existing systems throughout the center.

Riordan Manufacturing’s existing information system includes the employee information: personal information, pay rate, hire date, personal tax exemptions, seniority date, organization information, and vacation hours. Outside of the system many human resource functions are maintained hard copy or on excel spread sheet. Changes to the system are submitted in writing via special forms by employee managers and are entered into the system by payroll clerks. Training and development information in maintained in excel spreadsheets by training specialists. Recruitment data is retained by individual recruitment specialists.
