Public Law 94-142 or The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a law that protects special education for children with disabilities from the time they are born until they graduate high school. IDEA states these children are given the right to a free, and public education that provides them with a minimal restrictive environment, which will meet their special needs. In the public school system, children with disabilities have the opportunities to be mainstreamed into a traditional classroom. As an educator, providing the proper learning environment and assistance to children with disabilities can be challenging, but also rewarding. When teaching children with disabilities there are five cooperative teaching models used in an inclusive classroom. The five models are One Teach, One Support, Station Teaching, Parallel Teaching, Alternative Teaching, and Team Teaching.
The first teaching method One Teach, One Support method of instruction operates like a traditional classroom, however, it involves two teachers. The way this method works is one teacher will instruct the lesson, while the other teacher assists students. It is important that the teachers switch roles so each has time being the instructor and the assistant. After the lesson is presented and the students move to individual or group activities, both teachers will move around the room to provide assistance or support if needed.
The layout of the One Teach, One support method is the same as a traditional classroom. The main area to look at when setting up the classroom for the One Teach, One Support is making sure the teacher has room to walk around and assist students and to be able to assist them without interrupting others. The classroom setup for One Teach, One Support is very easy to assemble and is usually in rows.
