Consumption patterns of coffee

Coffee drinking has become a favorite among people in the United States. The famous Starbucks is not the only coffee shop across the nation; these days a number of establishments are eager to see their coffee. McDonalds has started marketing its Cafe concept. Burger King sells coffee brewed by Downy Egbert’s. Target department stores package and see its own brand. And gas station service stores, such as Dailey’s and Kangaroo have made the coffee bar a central part of their store design. Another factor that increased the demand for coffee consumption is the popular coffee brewing products such as, Keurig, Senso and Tassimo. These systems make it easier to have a cup of coffee. The older generation grew up thinking that coffee was a morning time pick me up beverage and an adult only after dinner drink. The modern generation holds a different view of drinking coffee due to the culture of coffee shops. Places such as Starbucks and bookstores have improved their selection of coffees with a variety of coffee flavors, sugar or sweeteners, and an assortment of flavored creamers.

In 2010, coffee future prices increased more than fifty percent and the price of coffee rose considerably (Wordpress Admin, 2011). Columbia, the number one Arabic coffee grower in the world, has experienced bad weather, diminishing crops, and high humidity leading to outbreak of coffee plant diseases. In 2009, about 129 million bags of coffee were produced worldwide, but only 126 million were produced (Harrington, 2011). This low production has placed an upward pressure on coffee prices and majorly depleting world stockpiles of green coffee beans.
