The Troxel Case

Troxel vs. Granville

Tommie Granville and Brad Troxel were lovers at one point in time; they were inseparable. From their relationship Ms. Granville and Mr. Troxel had two beautiful daughters Isabelle and Natalie. Somewhere in the relationship something went terribly wrong. The relationship ended in June 1991(from the overview of the case). Granted that Brad returned home with his parents and they endured weekend visitation of their granddaughters’ means Tommie Granville had custody of the girls. The split may have left Mr. Troxel in deep depression; he decided to take his own life. The suicide of Brad Troxel may have shaken the family in shock. Sooner or later you have to move on. The moving on is what caused the Troxel vs. Granville case.

After reading the editorial “Stop Violating Parents’ Rights: USA Today’s View and the commentary “Family” Includes Grandparents I found the points from the commentary to be more convincing. Children need grandparents to learn about where they came from (“Family” Includes Grandparents). The position of the editorial was to side with the parent’s side, or in this case Ms. Granville’s side. The editorial was basically saying that we should respect parent’s decisions in why they may cut back hours of visitation (“Stop Violating Parents’ Rights: USA Today’s View). We should avoid going to court for issues as this. It is right to the parent, and their rights. On the other hand the commentary was the secondary voice for in this case the Troxel grandparents. Richard S. Victor was very apparent with what he meant in his commentary. The very first paragraph said quite much. The third sentence of the first paragraph speaks for itself. If we were to eradicate the restricted right these laws offer for nonparents to seek visitation with children, there would be harsh and comprehensive effects on loving, predominantly grandparents, depriving them of any contact with their grandchildren.
