It would be best to describe what parole is. Parole is where a prisoner is given the release from his current sentencing prior to the day he or she should normally be getting out. The prisoner is subject to supervision by a correctional officer during the remainder of the time the prisoner is set on parole. Putting someone on parole is less expensive than to have the prisoner incarcerated. Parole is also a method of rehabilitating the prisoner with guidance and supervision from the parole officer. If a person breaks parole, then that person has to go back to prison and serve the remainder of the time in prison.

In order to get parole a person has to already be serving time in prison. The U.S. Parole Commission has jurisdiction over the federal prisons so they manage who is released on parole. If the prisoner is in a state prison, then that state parole board has the say so. If a person is on a death sentence then they cannot qualify for parole. There are laws per state that say whether a person can obtain parole or not. Some states will not allow repeat offenders to have parole. They will have to serve all their time.

The first step to get parole varies from state to state. A request or application must be filled out first. Some states require the prisoner to make the application and in other states, a state parole board can investigate the possibility of parole after the prisoner has served part of their sentence. A hearing will then be held to see if the parole will be granted or not. The approval of parole can be based on age, mental status, education, training, employment opportunities, and remorse for the crime done.
