Road Safety

With the development of transportation, there has been a sharp increase in the number of vehicles on the road. Meanwhile, the issue of road safety has raised a large amount of public concern and some people then claim that the only solution to tackle this problem is to impose severe punishment for driving offenses. However, in my opinion, it is not only one-sided but also impractical.

To begin with, the punishment must always fit the crime. Granted, severe punishment is sure to raise drivers' attention and thus reduce the offenses. But if a overspeed driver, though not hurting anyone, were sentenced to death, the laws would be illogical and unreasonable and the society would be simply in a mess. Therefore, it is impossible to improve road safety solely by way of punishment.

In addition, few would deny that it is better to make people consciously obey the traffic rules and regulations rather than force them to do so. What is meant by this is that the fundamental solution should be instilling the safety awareness to people's mind. For instance, the government can implement this by putting a higher criterion on people to get a license and timely checking up the drivers' qualification. What's more, children are supposed to be taught to behave legally when in kindergarten or primary school. Instead of severe punishment, all of the solutions above can effectively prevent traffic accidents.

Last but not least, as a responsible government, it can also improve traffic safety by developing a more advanced safety system, which will benefit both the drivers and the pedestrians. Indisputably, the current road system is badly needed to be refined. The more convenient the road system is, the safer people will be. Thus, people's safety can be secured by constructing better road system.

In conclusion, severe punishment for driving offenses is not the only way to improve road safety since many other means can be employed to contribute to road safety.
