When looking at our national average for rickets, it’s uncommon for our society to see this as a problem. In countries where there are less sunlight exposure and lack of Vitamin D in food, we can understand why rickets normally occur in their society. By looking at rickets, our nation could gather more information to prevent future generations from obtaining rickets, as well as providing a helping hand for people in need.

Rickets is generally hereditary disorder, which causes hypocalcaemia (low blood calcium) This relates back to our lecture in class which we discussed about how important calcium is for our bones and how this might cause a misbalanced for us to truly be in a homeostasis state. If our body is not producing enough calcium our bones cannot be strong enough and can lead to serious injuries or deformities while growing up. In some causes it can turn into alopecia in the future if not treated within the early years. Physically looking at the effects of rickets, we can already tell that people who are have rickets tend to have bended arms and legs because their bones are just so fragile. Their teeth also are not in the best of shape and tend to fall out more often because of the lack of calcium in their body. In some cases, parents of children with rickets sometimes get framed for being abusive because their child is constantly breaking bones.

There are generally many ways to help prevent a child from experiencing rickets. Getting exposed to Ultraviolet B light is key during pregnancy, especially if you live somewhere that’s cloudy or don’t see sunlight often like Britain. Fish oil, shiitake mushrooms, and vitamin d capsules can also help increase your calcium level during pregnancy and a blood test can be run to see if your child have rickets or not.
