History of Microsoft Windows Operating systems

The First Appearance of MS-DOS:

The first windows operating system (version: Microsoft DOS 1.0) was developed by Microsoft corporation in Aug 1981 for IBM personal computer. This OS was using command line interface to control the system. It had 4000 lines of assembly language source code, using Intel 8086 memory processor and ran in 8 KB of memory. MS-DOS was very efficient operating system but difficult to understand for many people.

WINDOWS 1.0 (1982-1985):

Microsoft’s first version operating system provided the end users to use a mouse to point and click through screens or windows. It had drop-down menus, scroll bars, icons, and dialog boxes that made end users learn easy to switch among many programs without having to quit. It had required a minimum of 256 kb, two double-sided floppy disk drives and a graphics adapter card.

WINDOWS 2.0 -2.11 (1987-1992):

Microsoft released windows 2.0 in 1987 with desktop icons and expanded memory. With the new features the end users were allowed to overlap windows, control the screen layout and use keyboard shortcuts to speed up the work. It was designed for the Intel 286 processor.

WINDOWS 3.0 – WINDOWS NT (1990-1994):

In 1990, Microsoft announces windows 3.0, followed shortly by windows 3.1 in 1992. It was the most widely used operating system sold 10 million copies in the first 2 years. It had better performance, advanced graphics with 16 colors and improved icons. File Manager, Print Manager and program Manager were introduced in windows 3.0.

WINDOWS NT:

Microsoft Windows NT was developed by “Portable system” team and released in 1993. NT 3.1 was a new 32-bit operating system with the ability to support older DOS as well as windows applications.
