Personal identity or what is essential to self differs between the three theories. Virtue ethics evaluates will, reason, desires, and character traits. Deontology evaluates will and reason. A person’s desire is thought of as an outside force that may prevent rational thinking. Utilitarianism and deontology ask, what ought I do? Virtue ethics asks, what is the best person to be?

My personal experience relates to virtue ethics. I found that I could be critical of others. This trait did not make me a happy person, and it was not the right way to act toward others. I wanted to be the best person I could be, and this trait hindered me from being so. I believed that changing this would help me to be a better person.

The three theories seem to differ more than they are similar. It seems that it would depend on how an individual views life would determine which theory is most reasonable to that individual.
