Sub-culture is view as a cultural subgroup differentiated by their status, ethnic background, residence, political views, music taste, and so on. The prominence of sub-cultural identification stated in the 1940s, well known as the decade of change in the United States of America. The hipsters, a popular sub-culture in the 1940s who adopted a lifestyle of jazz, unique music, special dressing, use of cannabis, sarcastic humor and self-impose poverty; has shifted the cultural aspect of the U.S society.

In the 1950s the concept of sub-culture was widespread. In 1957, Norman Mailer American novelist, journalist, playwright and film maker introduced the concept of “hip” meaning “write Negro” to symbolize the hipster of 1960s. He characterized them as people existing without root and having divorce from the society. In his statement “One is hipor, one is square”, he is comparing hips those who were commonly called hippies with the term rebellion.

The 1960s is described by Rick Perlstein, American historian and journalist as “the declension hypothesis”. This was to symbolize the rate at which subculture was becoming glorious. Those moments were moments of joys, moments when people stated recognizing the importance of subculture and how it has transformed and rebuild American’s cultural priorities. The understanding of American culture in the 1960s was extremely important and was driven by social Medias. Example of the beats (1950s), Mad magazine, C. Wright Mills. The beats, group of American post war 2 writers was mainly interested in cultural experimentation with different sexual habit, interest in drugs and eastern religions. On the other hand, Mad magazine founded by Harvey Kurthzman and publisher William Gaines in 1952 totally changed the way culture was perceived within the country.
