MyCourses will be used to post the syllabus and links to the readings, to run a class discussion board, and submit student personal reflections and project updates. Course Overview: In this class we will examine a wide range of topics from the concept of capitalism to the possibility of environmentally and socially sustainable economic development. Our goal is to provide a context for your business studies that will help you think more broadly about the evolution of the business system and about the relation between business and other sectors of society (government and civil society). While there are several related electives that you can take if you wish to explore any of the topics touched on in this course in more detail, this is really the only required course that examines the social aspects of business. As such it serves as an intro course to the Social Context Concentration in Strategy. We will therefore cover a lot of loosely related topics that together encompass facets of the history, social effects, ethicality and sustainability of business in modern society. We hope you will leave the course with a more well-rounded understanding of where the modern business/economic system came from and the role it plays in society. Learning Objectives: The course is designed to prepare future leaders to consider and deal with real-world complexity, whether it be the growing role of civil society, evolving standards (e.g. Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR) or emerging concerns (e.g. climate change); it should help them attempt to proactively find solutions to societal challenges rather...
