School Uniforms

Requiring school uniforms has been an ongoing debate in today’s schools. One side believes that by requiring school uniforms it will take away the distractions that come with wearing other clothes, while the other side believes that school uniforms take away a students freedom of expression through dress. Some students have turned school into an unending fashion show. Students worry more about what they are wearing and trying to keep up with the latest fashion trends, than they do school work. By wearing school uniforms it allows to students to focus on academics, overall improving the environment of the school.

In today’s society there is heavy pressure on teenagers or kids to look and dress a certain way. Students attend school dressing to impress others, rather than to learn. Kids are known to make rude remarks about the way one dresses. Uniforms take away that distraction of looking around to see what everyone else is wearing. Students with uniforms have no reason to discriminate against what others are wearing because everyone is wearing the same thing. Students can be at ease walking around school and not having to worry about being made fun of for what they are wearing, being at ease can make students feel more confident about who they are. When people learn to not judge based on what one is wearing, they get to know one another by what’s on the inside as opposed to what one is wearing ultimately improving the school environment.

To improve the environment of a school, behavior and school attendance needs to increase. By wearing uniforms students do not have to worry about being bullied for what they are wearing. Many students actually skip school because they are embarrassed about their clothing. In addition, to less students being bullied there is also a decrease in the influence of violence and gangs. Uniforms make it difficult to sneak in weapons, and easier to ban colors and or gang symbols. A school uniform policy...
