The Procter & Gamble Company was founded in 1837 when William Procter and James Gamble signed a partnership agreement formalizing the company with total combined assets totaling $7,192.24.  William and John had two things in common that eventually brought them together: a love of making candles and a love for Alexander Norris' daughters (their wives).  "Sometime during their first 4 years as brothers-in-law, William Procter and James Gamble’s mutual father-in-law, Alexander Norris, suggested that they go into business together rather than be in competition with each other." (Procter Meets Gamble, 2012)  Over 175 years later, Procter & Gamble (P&G), operates in nearly 70 countries and produce many of the world's best known household brands.  

In 1956 a P&G researcher, who was tired of changing cloth diapers for his own child, assigned fellow researchers to look into designing a better disposable diaper.  Over a year and a half later, P&G designed an affordable, comfortable, working disposable diaper and the brand name Pampers was born. (The Birth of a Category, 2013)  P&G continued to use market research and focus groups to ensure their products remained superior and met the needs of moms and babies as well as the environment.  The product line goes beyond disposable diapers for newborns and has expanded to toddler training pants and kid's hand soap.  Being a trusted household name, they also provide an online resource for parents and created a Parenting institute "to provide outreach on health, wellness, and nutrition for mothers and babies" (The Birth of a Category, 2013)

Announcing $8 Billion in sales for 2008, the Pampers brand continues to excel.  Their slogan of "love, sleep & play" drives their innovation as they continually seek new ways to make their diapers not only fit babies and toddlers but also their growing and active lifestyle.
