In the short stories “Salvation” by Langston Hughes and “Who Will Light the Incenses When Mother is Gone” by Andrew Lam both writer are suggesting uncertainty in family cultural and traditions are believable, honorable. The theme of each authors work builds around family values and ethics. These stories written by different authors similarly present a deeper feeling of values in the family; that direct or pushes individuals in finding or growing into the person they are. The contents of the both authors writing the use of words are used to help give the reader a sort of vision to the culture; such as in the “Salvation” the setting was in a church, from the story the writer use words like being saved and speaking in tongues, and coming to Jesus. These word help reinforce that this was a church of Christian belief perhaps Baptist. In the story “Who will light the Incenses When Mother is gone” the author theme was a birthday party with a grave concern of a mother. The concern of the mother was religious that asked who would carry on the old tradition of lighting the incenses in remembrance of spirits and believe. The author writes to captivate, and use words that produces the feeling of sacred beliefs or family beliefs that cause the reader to imagine a higher power.

* In both short stories the authors use the family, Andrew Lam use words that describe time in three eras the present, historically, and the uncertain when mother is gone the future.
