Health Care Operations Management
Management is involved in the 1) designing, 2) planning, 3) organizing, 4) directing, and 5) controlling functions of a business. Management establishes the goals and objectives of the firm or organization and plans how to attain them. Every Organization has three basic functional areas: finance, marketing, and operations. The Operation manager (OM) is aware of where the company has been in the past and is a driving force for where the company will be in the future. The OM is oriented to basic operations, such as producing goods and moving them out the door with the goal of improving service to the customer. Operations management focuses on managing the processes of producing and distributing products and services while looking at efficiency and effectiveness of the processes. The OM needs to be able to make decisions and be aware of the implications resulting from these decisions. To accomplish this they need to measure and analyze the internal processes for the business. Each departments of the organization should work together as a team to meet the goals (Kupferschmid).
The Health Care Operations Manager (HCOM) is the backbone of the organization. They are responsible for overseeing the quality of patient care, as well as staff recruitment and retention success. Primary goal for the HCOM is to provide fast, reliable service while keeping costs down. The HCOM needs to be continuously searching for ways to improve business processes while improving efficiency and effectiveness. It is a continuous process of problem solving and decision making.
The HCOM needs to focus on reducing variability because inconsistencies in inputs and outputs will produce uncertain results. Improving logistics increases workflow, capacity, and improves productivity from all the staff and other assets. Using a tracking and management system will identify each expense and help eliminate waste costs.
