Ethics Paper

Two years after I started working as a youth counselor for a youth program that provided services to disadvantage youth located in a high school, I was confronted with an ethical dilemma. A new qualified female employee that shared an office with me requested my assistance to speak on her behalf with Human Resource as a witness that she was suffering harassment by other employees. My coworker worked only with the pregnant teens in the program. I worked with the Spanish speaking population and also coordinated community service activities. She was being harassed by other coworkers that also were assigned to work with the teen parents. The harassment mainly consisted of extreme verbal abuse toward my coworker. The whole group in the teen parent program made the work environment difficult to work for my coworker in. For example, the main harasser would scream and curse at my coworker in front of the teen mothers. The others conspirators would misplace documents or intentionally gave wrong directions to the teen parents. My supervisor and other staff personnel in the youth program were aware of the situation. She did not receive any assistance from the supervisor and decided to report the situation to the Human Resources department and to the vice-president of the company.

I faced the following scenario. Based on my experienced, I have noticed that the company followed unprofessional and unethical procedures when an employee made a formal complaint. None of the previous employees who complained remained employed, regardless of the validity of their complaints. They were either fired or forced to quit. In addition, I was the sole provider at that time for my family. Furthermore, I believed that my coworker was an excellent employee. She had a great relationship with the teen parents.
