Huffman Trucking Training Project

Huffman Trucking is a nationwide transportation company that employs more than 1300 people at their facilities in Ohio, California, Missouri, and New Jersey. Major customers of Huffman include the U.S. Government, part suppliers, Riordan Plastics Manufacturing, and suppliers of consumer electronics (Apollo Group, 2012).

With facilities in major locations throughout the United States it is often difficult to coordinate a company-wide training ensuring key staff members are trained the same way using the same systems. Huffman is in the process of upgrading their current operating system from Windows 98 to the Windows 7 platform. To ensure a smooth transition key employees from each location are to attend a company-wide training. This training allows these key employees to learn the effective use of the new system and how it differs from the existing system. The training also allows trained employees to answer questions from users and operate as in-house trainers at their own facility.

Project Assumptions

Because Huffman employs more than 1300 people in four locations in the United States key employees need to travel to a training location. Training participants will travel from Ohio, California, Missouri, and New Jersey to a chosen location and spend the night in a hotel to attend the two-day training. It is not feasible or necessary to train every employee in the use of the new operating system, so approximately 25% (350) of employees should attend the training. These employees include daily users of the system, IT staff, and key personnel to serve as in-house trainers.

Because this is the first step in several types of IT projects in the near future, close attention should be paid to the evaluation process at the end of the project. This will allow future project managers insight to important information regarding best practices and lessons learned throughout this project.
