Landlords and those selling their houses should not be able to choose who they rent to or who to sell to based on race, gender, national origin, color, family status, or disability. This is because it is unfair and discriminatory. It is discrimination because it denies tenants a chance to live where want to. It is unfair to discriminate on race, gender, national origin, color, family status, or disability as it denies home seekers equal opportunities to housing. As it can be seen in the video"Fair Housing Accents", a home seeker is calling a housing office various times. The home seeker uses different names and accents to inquire on a house for rent. He is told there are no vacancies available each time. It is until he depicts a Caucasian man that he is told there is a vacancy. This is a clear act of discrimination which denies tenants an opportunity to live in good housing and healthy environment (Ferrante, 2011). Landlords and home sellers should not discriminate because it leads to depression, limited opportunities, and restricted access to services on home seekers.
Prejudice has played a significant part in home seekers discrimination. Prejudice according to Temkin, McCracken and Veralee, (2011) is a preconceived conception that is not grounded on actual facts or individual experience. It is an opinion developed out of faulty grounds. Prejudice on race, gender, national origin, color, family status, or disability is the basis for rejection of home seekers. Prejudice has also been based on general hatred of a race, color, or national origin, either as a result of individual experience or stereotyping. In this regard, landlords and home sellers should not choose who to rent or sell a house to based on race, gender, and national origin among others.
