Dominic Mintoff

Dominic “Dom” Mintoff, who was born on 6 August 1916 in Bormla, Malta, was a very intellectual and remarkable man, who influenced the Maltese politics and changed the ways of Maltese life and his actions are still felt to this day. He was a Maltese politician, a journalist and an architect, which is why he was nicknamed "The Architect". He is famous for being the Leader of the Labour Party and was a Prime Minister from 1955-1958.

Mintoff was not a tall man, but what he lacks in length he gained in intellect. He was a very recognisable man with his large black spectacles, light blue eyes and his heartening and welcoming smile. He was known to always wear a large round belt buckle. Mintoff was quit stubborn tough. He would state what he wants to say and keep going at it and thinks he was always right. He always wanted to say the last word. One of his biggest arguments was against the Church, which lasted for many years. The church had announced that everyone that favoured labour was doing a mortal sin and could not get confirmation. This was an immense crisis in Malta as religion was very important.

Dominic Mintoff believed that everyone was equal and that everyone should get help from the state. He wanted to make a poor Malta, rich. Mintoff made many deal with the British and Americans, which filed the Maltese coffers. He generally increase the average standard way of living and he established a welfare state. This helped many people in need, children’s allowance was created helping many families in need, and pension was created which allows any man and woman to stop work and not to worry about money. Most importantly, Mintoff made Malta a republic, getting the British out of Malta.

All the ideas that Mintoff created are still in effect today which is what makes him very important to the history of Malta. Mintoff deserves our respect for his influence on political taught and for making Malta much better place. Without this great man, we...
