When considering options for how to approach this scenario, one must consider that Bradley and his wife should have been in counseling but were not. Due to this there are issues that need to be looked at and worked on but not at the moment. These issues will have to be looked at further for Bradley and his wife’s marriage to survive. For now it is important to focus on what can be accomplished to help settle the present situation. Negotiators must look at disarming Bradley and getting innocent bystanders away to safety.

At the present time it cannot be determined if this is a hostage or non-hostage situation. It will develop into one or the other depending on the actions of the negotiator and assault team. The nine students are not being held for any sort of leverage by Bradley, they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Bradley is holding his wife and the professor because he's upset and feels that they need to explain to him what is going on. He has high emotions and feels that he is being betrayed by his wife and the child she is carrying may not even be his. Since Bradley’s anger is really directed at his wife the professor does not even need to be there either but Bradley’s emotions are running too high to realize this.

Bradley is in the middle of the crisis stage. This morning he was probably in pre-crisis stage, due to his emotions and the actions of his wife, even if she does not realize her actions is causing an issue has pushed Bradley into the crisis stage. Bradley now needs to be moved into the negotiation/stabilization stage to calm him down and get a peaceful resolution to this situation. (Journal of Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism, 2013) If done correctly this situation can be negotiated and brought to an end without loss of life or injury.
