On the night of April 14th, the “impossible” happened. The Titanic, a luxurious and supposedly unsinkable ship, has started to submerge after it collided with an enormous iceberg, resulting in more than 1500 deaths.

The Titanic was owned by the White Star Line and was built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland. Construction began on 1909. Due to its size, hundreds of workers spent nearly 3 years on it before it was launched on May 31st, 1911. It started its journey on April 10th, 1912 in Southampton, England. It then headed off to Cherbourg, France and Queenstown, Ireland. On the night of April 14th, just leaving Queenstown, crewmember, Fredrick Fleet spotted an iceberg, but it was too late to avoid it. The iceberg strikes the Titanic at 11:40 PM. By 2:45 AM, the Titanic had completely sunk.

As many people say, every mistake can be prevented, so can the tragedy of the Titanic. First of all, the Titanic was traveling way too fast in an area that is known for containing icebergs. It was impossible for anyone to maneuver a ship that size, fast enough to avoid the iceberg. Secondly, Captain E.J. Smith ignored seven iceberg warnings. If he had slowed down the ship, it would have never hit the iceberg. Lastly, the number of lifeboats was limited. The Titanic carried 20 lifeboats, enough for 1,178 people, but only 706 people survived when there were more than 2,000 people onboard. There was also an unequal number of men who died due to the, “women and children first,” order.

There was also another steamboat tragedy similar to the Titanic. In 1898, which is 14 years before the Titanic, another ship had sunk by an iceberg on an April night. It carried around 3,000 people, almost like the Titanic, and had a number of lifeboats far less than the number of passengers. Weirdly enough, the ship was named the “Titan.”

The sinking of the Titanic has been one of the most deadly maritime disasters and famous shipwrecks in history. The...
