The Metropolitan Museum of Art, located in New York City, contains millions of works from all over the world, dating back to thousands of years ago. The MET holds a wide range of art history from paintings to musical instruments. The museum is divided into eighteen galleries all based on their location and time period. As a part of my Visual Art course, I have had the pleasure of having my own experience at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a part of this, I focused my experience on two paintings in the gallery of 19th and early 20th century European paintings and sculptures. Ville-d’Avray painted by Corot in 1870 and The Forest in Winter at Sunset in 1846-47 by Rousseau.

“The Metropolitan's world-famous collection of European paintings covers the period from 1230 to 1900, offering a survey of the history of painting in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, and Britain. It is divided into two suites of galleries: one devoted to the Old Masters and the other to the nineteenth century.” (Metropolitan Museum of Art) Some of the artists featured in this exhibition were Gericault, Delacroix, Ingres, Corot, Rousseau, Turner, and Poussin. Most of the painters featured in this exhibition are of French descent, others Italian and British. The paintings featured were from different times periods, covering Neo-Classicism, Romanticism, Barbizon School, and Landscape.

Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, a French Landscape painter had many paintings displayed at the Met. Corot was one of the leaders in the Barbizon School. The one that caught my eye there (as well as it did in class) was Ville-d’Avray. This painting was done with oil on canvas, and was completed in 1870. The dimensions of this wonderful painting are 54.9 x 80 cm.
