“Why a college education is important to me”

I strongly believe that having a college education is extremely beneficial in today’s competitive environment. According to Borade (2010) “A college is correctly conceived as a place that bestows wisdom and enlightenment”. Being a college graduate would provide me with many benefits. According to Demas (2005); one of the primary benefits of going to college is being able to obtain a college degree. A college degree helps you propel you career in the right direction. A college degree also opens doors for good job opportunities. Below are just a few of the benefits of obtaining my college degree.

Firstly being a college graduate would provide me with the opportunity to getting a promotion at my current job thus an increase in salary which would not only benefit me but my family also. According to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics from 2007, the mean high school graduate income was $31,286, roughly $26,000 less than the $51,181 earned by college graduates. Over the course of a 45-year working life, that amounts to $1.17 million. Even a two-year associate's degree provides an average of $180,000 more than a high-school diploma in a lifetime. A doctorate adds more than $2 million to a worker's pocket, given the average annual salary of $80,977. This increase in salary will not only benefit my family but in extension my community because as more money is available there will be more money to spend on everyday commodities for example food, clothing and utility bills and also leisure activities for example family vacations and luxury items for example ipads and game consoles.

Secondly obtaining a college degree will drastically improves one’s health and confidence and this is supported by Susan J Demas (2005) whose research concluded that “Those with college degrees have better health, exercise more, and smoke less.
