Domestic Violence

Thesis:

I will be informing the audience about domestic violence.

Introduction:

Attention Getter: Nearly 1 million women experience at least one incident of domestic violence each year. AT least 750,000 children a year witness violence. Two women are killed each week by their partner or ex-partner. Victims of domestic are more likely to experience repeat victimization (the process of being or becoming a victim) than victims in any other type of crime.

A. Domestic violence and its effect on the victim

I. Domestic violence physically, psychologically, and socially affects women, men, and their families. Domestic violence is an attempt by the partner to exert control through intimidation, fear, verbal abuse, or threats of violence. Victims may keep distance from friends, family, and neighbors; they may even lose all social support. With time the abusive partner may get worse and use severe methods to control the victim. Eventually the violence may lead to serious injury, hospitalization, or death. Domestic violence takes away the victims ability to maintain control over their own lives; they live in fear and even feel scared in their own home.

B. What can they do?

I. Call 911 and report the incident. Write down the police report and incident number and keep up with your records, if necessary seek medical attention have injuries photographed/documented. Go to a safe place such as domestic violence shelters always have a safety plan. File a protective order and STAY AWAY!!

C. Young people and domestic violence

I. 13 to 15-year-olds are as likely to experience violence as the over-16s. 25 per cent of girls and 18 per cent of boys surveyed reported that they had experienced some form of physical violence. Nearly 75 per cent of girls reported that they had experienced some sort of emotional violence from partners.
