Assignment 1.2

Professor Mary Rose Kasraie

I read “Farm Girl” written by Jessica Hemauer. The main point of this story is how she realized the life she had growing up helped make her who she is now. Towards the end of the story Hemauer talks of when she realized that the experience she had from working on her father’s farm actually helped to make her the hard worker that she is now. ( Jessica Hemauer, Pg. 86).

In the beginning, she tells of the work she had to do even at the young age of 10. She also tells her feelings of how she so desperately wanted to fit in with the other children her age. It wasn’t until her freshman year of high school, that she got her chance. Her dad wanted to expand their family farm and wanted to hire outside help allowing the children the opportunity to just be kids. In no time at all she was joining every club and group that she could. She even decided to get a part time job. She was finally able to fit in with the others kids her age. She started noticing that even though she was fitting in she was still different than the other girls her age. This is when she realized that even though she didn’t like the hard work she had to do, it actually helped to make her the hard worker she is now.

In my opinion her purpose for writing this story was because she wanted to let other young people know that they are not alone in their struggle to fit in. The genre is a memoir, she may have been wanting to let other kids know that they are not alone in feeling like they are different. The audience she was trying to reach would be those people that struggle to fit in or are different than everyone...
