Corporation Social Responsibility (CSR) and

Their Effects on Organizational Success

Introduction

Corporation social responsibility is clarified as "voluntary corporate commitment to exceed the explicit and implicit obligations imposed on a company by society's expectations of conventional corporate behavior" (Falick & Heblich, 2007).

However, due to its voluntary nature, i.e. neither is it supervised under the law regulations nor controlled by any economic obligations, therefore, according to human's nature instincts, corporations are unlikely to commit themselves in social responsibility. Not only corporation, in the materialistic world nowadays, the society is also gradually concerning less about social responsibilities of corporations, instead, they are putting more and more emphasize on the ability of generating profit of the company (the classical view of social responsibility), consequently, the essence of social responsibility (the socioeconomic view) has been neglected, no one is willing to exceed conventional obligations to accomplish corporation social responsibility (CSR). Therefore, a series of queries is raised - whether corporation social responsibility will hinder the development of the firm? whether corporation social responsibility only poses negative effects of corporation operation? whether a balance can be stroke between social responsibility and operational success?

Social responsibility is described in different ways, and these ways are decribed according to the extent to which a corporation commits social responsibility. This includes three concepts - social obligation, which is the lowest level of social responsibility, social responsiveness and social responsibility, which is the highest level. Social obligation is when a corporation engages in social action on ground that they are required to meet law regulations and economic obligations.
