1. Introduction

1.1. Terms of Reference

The report is a formal assignment on the subject of understanding the effectiveness of the performance management processes at the University of Glasgow using Purcell et. al.'s (2002) People and Performance Model. The report is written for the purposes of the formative assessment of the Performance Management module. It will draw out the key conclusions and recommendations.

1.2. Aims & Objectives

1.2.1. Analyse the effectiveness of the performance management processes in your organisation in supporting AMO (ability and skill, motivation and incentive and opportunity to participate).

1.2.2. Using Purcell, et. al.'s (2002) People and Performance Model, critically evaluate how the performance management process in your organisation promotes a performance culture.

1.2.3. Recommend improvements in performance management policies and practices to support sustainable organisational and employee performance.

2. Methodology

The CIPD (2005) has designed a number of tools that can be used to assess People Management and Business Performance. The HR Process Review is a tool intended for the use of HR practitioners as a means of systematically reviewing the organisations' "current people management policies and practices in order to assist in identifying potential shortcomings or areas for improvement, (CIPD 2005).

The HR Process Review questionnaire was distributed to 10 senior managers and 10 line managers at the University of Glasgow, College of Science & Engineering during August 2012. 15 completed, anonymous surveys were returned in response to the request for participation in the survey.
