Marketing campaign is very important for any business. A successful campaign can leads a company to a huge amount of revenue. However, a failure commercial also can bring to a company a lot of trouble, financially and reputably. Recently, I watched a commercial over the Internet and believe that that commercial is a trouble.

The company is Wonderful Pistachios, and they currently have an ad campaign called “get crackin'”. The overall message implies that everybody has a unique way to open a pistachio. In order to illustrate that idea, Wonderful Pistachios hired celebrities who are rather weird to be the company's spokesman. For example, there are the Gangnam Style guy and Dennis Rodman are currently in Wonderful Pistachio ads exhibiting their unique style of opening a pistachio. Those ads are very successful ads. However, recently, the company just released a new ad that, in my opinion, would be an example for a failure. In the commercial, there are two guy, one looks like North Korea’s President, and the other one, Dennis Rodman. Dennis is holding a pistachio in his hand, then a North Korea’s President pushes a button to explore a nuclear bomb just to open that pistachio. This scene does not really make any sense to me. There are probably a few good ways to open a pistachio, but probably not a nuclear bomb. What does that have to do with the product? When I was watching that video and seeing a very weird looking Dennis Rodman open a pistachio with a nuclear bomb, that video was not very appealing to me. To make insinuations of a nuclear threat from North Korea to sell pistachios does not seem like rational marketing to me. Moreover, the ad can bring a wave of response from consumers about global political, nuclear issue that are hottest in the Internet. It does not seem worth the risk to have a global political crisis to help sell your product. I like pistachios, but when I see Wonderful Pistachio ads I am negatively affected by the ad.
