Chapter 19 Targeted Questions

1. What were the two books written in the before the Civil War that created stronger feelings among the abolitionists movement? How did the reaction in the South differ from that in Great Britain?

The two books written were Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe and The Impending Crisis of the South by Hinton R. Helper. The British felt sorry for slaves in America and supported abolitionists, but the South felt the books made them appear cruel.

2. Between 1855 and 1857, detail Kansas issues in attempting to become a state.

There was no developed government within the area; so many pro-slavery people came in to attempt to create a pro slavery government. They were called frauds and conflict broke out between pro and anti-slavery movements.

3. How did Preston S. Brooks actions back fire against the slave cause?

Brooks was insulted by Summer. Brooks fought Summer, which lead to the North rising against him.

4. Who won the election of 1856 and why?

Buchannan won the election of 1856 because people though Fremont lacked honesty and good judgment.

5. What were the circumstances surround the Dred Scott decision and what were the results?

Dred Scott was an Illinois slave who attempted to sue for his freedom. Since he was not technically a citizen of the US he lost the case.

6. What caused the Panic of 1857 and what did the North request?

LA gold caused currency inflation, there was over speculation of land and railroads, and the Homestead acts which gave land for little cost.

7. What happen with John Brown at Harper’s Ferry?

John Brown attempted to start a slave rebellion by supplying weapons. He was caught at Harpers Ferry and pleads insanity in court.

8. Other than Abraham Lincoln, who was nominated by which parties for the election of 1860?

Douglas – Democrats
