1) Rodney Mullen is trying to explain the complexity of the environment and community in the beginning. Explain he means when he is talking "accent" (2:40-4:00)? Who refers to this as "vertosis"? What does it mean? (2:40)

By accent he means taking sort of action and manipulating it to make it your own. Tony Hawk refers to it as vertosis. It means taking in environmental components to create your own version of an action.

2) What does Rodney Mullen believe is the biggest obstacle of creativity? Why? (5:00)

Mullen believes the biggest obstacle of creativity is breaking through the barrier of disbelief. He thinks that most people are creative but also believes that we are too scared to use it to make something. He thinks that a lot of people have good ideas but it is beyond their “capability”.

3) What is one of the few ways you can see it? Explain the significance of the hypothetical example of the "kid from Madagascar" example? (5:30)

One of the few ways you can see it is by seeing people do it better. It is simply spreading something one has started and another takes it and makes it better. The significance of the hypothetical situation is to provide a specific example of what he is explaining.

4) What does he mean by crossing the "barrier? (6:00)

What Mullen means by crossing the barrier is the barrier of disbelief. From watching the video of something being done one can see for himself that it can be done. Once one realizes that something is possible he may try it for himself.

5) What is the other way that Rodney Mullen says you can see it? (6:12).

You can also see it by taking moderately talented guys and put them into an environment composed completely of people similar to them. At that point it is only a matter of time before they begin to create exceptional creations. It is inevitable that they will create something from their own work and the combinations and inspiration of their peers.
