A short description of market place: In 2010, the federal government passed the Affordable Care Act (ACA), creating new marketplaces and rules and regulations for group and individual healthcare plans. The passage of the law also ushered in new taxes, fees, and requirements for compliance for employers, insurance companies, and third party administrators. The Marketplace simplifies the search for health coverage by gathering the options available in your area in one place. Plans can be compared based on price, benefits, and other features important to you before making a choice. The Marketplace will also tell you if you qualify for free or low-cost coverage available through Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

85% of Americans already have health coverage and won't have to do much of anything. The 15% of Americans who don't currently have health insurance will either have to obtain health insurance, get an exemption, or pay a per month fee on their tax returns for every month they are without health coverage starting in 2014. The young, healthy people must enroll in the health exchanges to cover the cost of insuring sicker, older people. The people who use it less will subsidize the people who use it more. If mostly poorer and sicker individuals sign up, the enrollment figures will increase. But we also have to consider not just how many people, but what kind of people enroll for the insurance. Two-thirds of the uninsured in America are under the age of 40. If the average age of enrollees on the exchanges is on the higher end, who may require more medical care in the immediate future, the system can break down. Another challenge is that explaining the concept of insurance can be difficult, especially for people who haven’t had any in the past, or who come from countries where the concept is foreign.
