1) Fewer than 100 words Be to the point with the message. The old ways of providing your entire biography and giving praise to the recipient is outdated. Someone who receives a short and tailored message is more likely to respond. 2) No mention of jobs anywhere Why not mention jobs in the email? It is unnecessary and it is intimidating. By sending them an email, you are already saying that you are in the market for a job; you do not need to state the obvious. 3) Connection goes first By mentioning your connection first, it gives the recipient a reason to care. It will maximize your chances of getting your message read. 4) Generalize your interest If you send an email only asking for a job, you may pigeon hole yourself. The employer may not be hiring at the current time and may only respond to the direct request. Instead, if you ask to discuss the type of the company they are or the industry itself or the career journey they have had, it feels more like a request for a conversation, not a job interview. 5) Maintain control of follow-up This helps close the gap of time it may take to get back to you. For example, if you close your email by stating you understand they may have a busy schedule and if they are not able to reply to your email, you will follow up in a week. It provides the opportunity to follow up. Make sure to follow up!
