Sexual Harrsament

The organization that I have chosen to write about is the United States Army. The United States Army is the largest and oldest established branch of the U.S. military. It spans a period of less than two and a half centuries and is the world’s only singular remaining superpower of the late twentieth and twentieth –first century. The Army is a key component of the U.S. Armed Forces, providing expeditionary land forces wherever and whenever they are required. Working in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Defense, the Army trains and equips Soldiers and creates leaders among them to rapidly respond when they are called upon to serve our Nation (1). The Army holds their personnel to a higher standard than most organizations, but like any other organization it too has fall short in certain aspects of its leadership. One area that I would like to address is sexual harassment in the work place.

Sexual harassment as defined by the Army Regulations is a form of gender discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature in work conditions that can create a hostile environment for persons of either gender (2). The Equal Opportunity Act established in 1984, gave both men and woman equal rights under the laws of the constitution. Sexual harassment comprises of both ethical and moral behaviors.

In 1997, Army officials and the civilian chiefs of all branches of the armed forces were to report to the Senate Armed Services Committee on the progress made in investigating and punishing those responsible for sexual harassment. Army officials were testifying before a Senate panel investigating allegations of sexual harassment in the military, just a day after the Army's highest ranking non-commissioned officer (NCO) was accused of sexual misconduct (3).
