The exposure of the Philippines to international trade was a huge factor to the rise of Filipino Nationalism. It was as if nationalism was a package that arrived to the Philippines on a foreign boat to be delivered to the Filipinos. Having the Philippines posses the ability and the opportunity to trade with foreign lands have benefited the Filipinos greatly. It not only improved the economic state of the Philippines but it as well helped the Filipinos achieve nationalism. Through the process of trade, they were able to come into contact with many foreign traders. By communicating with the different foreign traders they gained many different ideas they have never been exposed to. They grew unsatisfied with the current order of things and wanted to change it socially and politically. Filipinos realized that the Philippines was their home and country wanted to have a say on how they should run the country.

Another factor that triggered the nationalism of the Filipinos started with the opening of the Philippines to international trade. This factor would be the introduction to liberalism. By opening the windows and doors of the Philippines, they’ve welcomed all the liberal and modern ideas which came into the country by the form of communication, books or other form of literature. One of which would be the idea of freedom. Filipinos were able to read about ideas of numerous well-known Philosophers of the world and the freedom of the American and French revolutions. Those Filipinos who were able to receive and grasp these ideas started to strive for change. Some of them would soon be the ones who would lead the people to the revolution. Introduction to liberalism didn’t just come from the international trades but as well from a man named Carlos Ma de la Torre who was assigned to be the governor-general of the Philippines.
