Multiple Intelligences and Me

Gardener’s theory on multiple intelligences looks at the multiple cognitive abilities that a person may possess naturally and develop with practice (Helding, 2009). The different facets and types of these abilities will be briefly explained as well as how three types of these multiple intelligences can be applied to my life. With identifying interpersonal, intrapersonal, and bodily-kinesthetic intelligences for application, I will demonstrate a working understanding of how cognitive ability can affect a person’s life.

Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences eight types of intelligence were identified, each with a distinct impact on a person’s ability as it relates to his or her lives (Kowalski & Westin, 2011). The first of these types of intelligence was identified as linguistic intelligence. It focuses on a person’s ability to understand, learn, use language(s)Helding, 2009). A person with high linguistic intelligence is likely be multilingual and would most likely be employed as a linguist. A second intelligence is logical or mathematical intelligence and is essentially a strong sense of mathematics and logical deductions. People proficient in mathematical intelligence may grasp high-level mathematical theory employment as a physicist, mechanical or electronic engineer, or as an algorithmic encoding or decoding specialist is probable. Third on the list of intelligences is spatial intelligence. This intelligence is identified as a person possessing the ability to understand and recreate or alter that reality in his or her mind or on paper (Helding, 2009). The spatially gifted person may find him or herself capable architect or artist. A fourth intelligence is bodily-kinesthetic intelligence focusing on athletic ability.
