“Why So Serious?”

The prince of crimes verses an agent of chaos; Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson have had legendary roles in the Batman francize both actors starring as the Joker. Jack Nicholson starred in the 1989 film “Batman”, directed by Tim Burton. Heath Ledger starred in the 2008 Batman film “The Dark Knight”, directed by Christopher Nolan. Though the directors of these two films had vastly different opinions of how these Jokers should be portrayed, there are still striking similarities between them. The Joker has the same nemesis in both movies he has similar appearance and a dark twisted sense of humor, but noticeably different is the story line and the type of violence.

Batman has sworn to protect the innocent people of Gotham city. As a series of unfortunate events unfold the Joker played by Jack Nicholson becomes the first and greatest nemesis of Batman. The Joker not only causes mayhem in Gotham city but also has a very personal relationship with Batman. The Joker challenges Batman’s morals every chance he can get, building the ultimate villain-hero relationship. It’s almost as if the Joker needs Batman around to prove his point.

As the Joker Heath Ledger plays the Joker who causes complete and utter chaos in Gotham city. The Joker quickly becomes Batman the sworn protector of Gotham city’s greatest nemeses. The Joker challenges Batman’s morals with every nefarious move he makes. The Joker quickly builds a very personal hero-villain relationship with Batman. Ledgers joker seems to need Batman to know he’s committing these crimes to strengthen that bond that they share.

Jack Nicholson’s role as the Joker had a very sick and twisted humor. The Joker often laughed as he killed his victims in various ways. The laugh is often accompanied with a huge smile as he seems to be enjoying himself as he kills his victims. Also Nicholson’s Joker had very witty one liners that he would frequently use to frustrate his foe.
