Ethical Issues in Management: Hiring

Managers in any business are required to know and apply their knowledge of the systems their organization has put in place to support ethical behavior. “Selection systems are the formal systems that are in place for hiring new employees.” (Trevino & Nelson, 2007, p. 271). Managers face the most difficult ethical issues when it comes to having to terminate, discipline or hire and employees. Having policies and procedures in place, such as a code of conduct, is an essential function for managers because hiring is a day-to-day business practice.

Managers who are involved with hiring face many moral and ethical issues. A few issues that they deal with are adherence to the law, pre-employment drug screening and verification of facts in the application process. Hiring managers are bound to follow all local, state and federal laws for their organization; they also need to ensure that they are adhering to laws that designed to protect applicants, such as Equal Employment Opportunity. Managers have to keep personal judgments and biases away from the hiring process. The manager needs to be able to choose the person with the right qualifications for the position. This is where the selection systems that their organization has put into place come into play. "The selection system is key to hiring employees that fit into the culture of the firm." (Trevino & Nelson, 2007, p. 271).

Hiring managers need to be able to demonstrate responsible behavior when dealing with applicants or considering a new hire. Ethics are important when selecting potential job candidates. There are sensitivity issues that are encountered on a daily basis. To maintain integrity, hiring managers have to keep perspective and ensure that the process is just and fair. There should be clear, concise guidelines in place. No one should be disqualified because of...
