Ethics Awareness Inventory Analysis

Ethics defines who we are as a society. Laws, which are a by-product of social mores and legislative collaboration, may govern society as a whole, but it is this author’s belief that what is in one’s soul defines a person’s ethical makeup. The task assigned in week one asked this author to complete an ethics awareness inventory. This paper will document the interpretation of the results of that inventory and how those results apply to this author’s personal and professional development.

The inventory, consisting of 24 different statements asked this author two give responses with those being in most agreement and least agreement. After completing the inventory, the responses were tabulated and an ethics awareness profile was compiled The profile used the acronym CORE with each letter representing Character (C), Obligation (O), Results (R), and Equity (E). The profile indicated this author’s ethical perspective was most likely based on obligation and least likely based on equity.

Having served as a police officer for the last 25 years, this author has been instilled with a strong sense of duty and obligation and the ability to recognize right from wrong. A firm belief is held that all human beings must be treated in a positive and ethical manner. This author believes that everyone should be handled in a fair and even handed manner. When handling certain situations while on patrol, this officer has made decisions based on what is ethically right according to personal standards but not necessarily right according to the law or proscribed operational or patrol guidelines.
