Introduction

The two types of operating systems are Open Source and Closed Source. When talking about open and closed course we are talking about the programming code which allows the program to run. What is open source or closed source mean? What are the different advantages and disadvantages of the open source or closed source? What is the comparison of the open source and closed source systems are?

Defining Open Source System

Open sourced operating system allows the public access the programs source code. It is also free and allows modification of the code and then distribution of the modified code by anyone in the public.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Open Source

With Open Source, it allows the public free access to the program code to modify, debug, and distribute as necessary. The cost is usually free so that is one advantage and the modifications are also available for free. Another advantage ties into the available of the modified code from the public to fix bugs or improvements without waiting for the next patch to address the issues seen. Easier to manage due to the lack of license compliances needed, which allows the program to be loaded anywhere and on as many locations needed. Technical forums are an advantage because if there is a problem with the code there is usually an answer listed somewhere or the answer will be provided from an individual with some time on his or her hands. Lack of customer support provided is a disadvantage, because the company is not solely responsible for the program code since the product is usually free in cost. If installed can leave a large learning curve within the IT staff in businesses and could led to hiring an expert to train the staff.
