The institution of slavery existed thought most of the Western Hemisphere at the start of the nineteenth century and persisted in the United States until Civil War (1861-1865)

There were many people against slavery by the 1820’s. many antislavery societies believed that the African Americans were an inferior race and could not coexist with the white people. The whites increasingly joined the African Americans in openly criticizing slavery.

In this writing we have stories of various people who had escaped from slavery, this people saw slavery from first hand, and they can write they own experience.

Here we have story from Frederic Douglas (1817-1895) who after escaped from slavery become crusader for abolition, both in the platform and of the press. His story is one of important autobiographies ever written in the United States.

The story is very shocking and disturbing, he wrote about his life in slavery. He does not know anything about his age, actually he never met any of slaves who knows when is his own birthday. Privileges to know their ages have only white children. He has been taken from his mother very young, he even does not have any remembering on his mother, because he saw her few times in his life, and wherever it’s happened, it was during night.

He talk about his master, actually his two master. First one was had three farms, and thirty slaves. His overseer was one of a passionately cruel people. He enjoyed to whipped slaves. Second one is Master Hugh’s, and during time in his house he learns to write and read with help of his mistress who teach him alphabet and inches, and everything else, every friendship which he had with little white boys he converted to teach something.

Time when he became a half of free man was on one of his duty when he was sick, and overseer who was terrible person did not has any excuse for him but he begun to hit him. In that moments he take a things in his own hands, after his master could not helped him. He had...
