Ethical Issues in Management Hiring

Hiring is an everyday job of all businesses, when hiring, there are several policies and procedures that are necessary and must be followed. This will direct and attend to the orders that businesses should follow to meet the conditions of the law and assurance that the business is not showing discrimination against any group, but that the company hires the one most qualified without regard to race, religion, and gender.

There are so many moral and ethical issues to deal with each day by managers who are concerned in the hiring procedure.   In addition, hiring managers must always stick to the laws that are written to protect the applicants. It is a manager responsibility to must put all biases aside and hires the right person with the right qualities for the position. While this is not a hard task, many make it hard.   If an applicant is in a protected group, such as that of a minority or an applicant over the age of 50 and the person is not hired, the person could file a discrimination lawsuit against the business. It must be noted that the business did not refuse the applicant due to race or age, but when these issues take place they can be expensive to a business.  

Today businesses test applicants before hiring them. This way the business is protected in case of a lawsuit. In this case the business will bring the results of the test to a court of law and recommend that the applicant who was hired was hired because he or she test scores were the best. At one time companies did not do a drug tests but many promote a drug free environment. By doing this companies require pre-employment drug testing. To eliminate risk, these tests are mandatory. The Pre-Employment Drug Screening of America has stated, “In 1987, a national testing laboratory, Smith Kline Beecham, found that 18.1 percent of all workers tested had positive results. By 1997 that figure was down to 5.4 percent because of the mandatory testing....
