Working as a Network Administrator is something that has interested me for some time now. The IT field is full opportunities and unlimited growth, due to technology changing at a rapid pace. A network admin is somebody that is constantly monitoring the network for effiency and potential weakness. They need to be knowledgeable in network structure, so they can plan accordingly for network growth. In order to accomplish this, the network admin has to be able to identify hardware needed to accommodate the expansion, be able to work on routers and switches, and be good at sub-netting. While handling all of the physical work, the net admin will be proficient on server maintenance, so to prevent data loss and network down time. There are certain tools that you have to be good with as well. Knowing how to use crimpers and making cable is crucial when servicing a network. Ensuring users know the do’s and don’ts is part of your scope. Scheduled training for users is paramount, and it should be conducted quarterly for information assurance compliance. Establishing a sharing system is another net admin responsibility. A local drive that allows users to share data on the network is something all business should have. If this is setup on the network, as an admin, you have to give permission and assign security groups for users. This way, you can stop certain people from accessing files or data that they shouldn’t. In conclusion, the scope for a network administrator is huge, but is attainable with the right degree plan, determination, and attention to detail.
