Recommendation to improve current situation to sustain growth, effectiveness and development in the organization.

Being the head of dietitian in New Territories East (NTE) Cluster for over [two] decade and facing an ever changing working environment and increasing societal awareness on the importance of healthy lifestyle, first of all, we recommend Janet to re-examine her self-concept, attitudes, values, beliefs, strengths and weakness and behavior (De Vito 1986) by conducting a thorough self-awareness assessment to revisit and refresh her own values, cognitive style, change and interpersonal orientation and correctly identify and uncover whether these are still aligned with organizational goals, her own instrumental and terminal values and her coworkers’ needs and drives. It is because as declared by Dubrin et al (2003), self-awareness is an insightfully processing feedback about oneself to improve personal effectiveness while Daniel Goleman (2004) also asserted that self-awareness is the first component of emotional intelligence, which is a sine qua non of leadership. After such candid assessment, she will have an in-depth understanding of her emotions, needs and drives and recognize how such feelings affect herself, her coworkers and their performance.

A successful leader shall be very good in dealing with all the aspects of motivation, communication, interpersonal relations and teamwork as well with group dynamics. As revealed from her interview, we realize that she tends to be status quo to her leadership style and is unwilling to adapt it to fit different individual behaviors and situations. She also pins the hindrance of team spirit and team performance on the younger generation managers for being too aggressive and demands her coworkers to follow her own instruction conceiting having performed a high standard of services due to the fact that no serious crisis has happened.
