Unit 3 Lecture Study Guide

1. List the 4 primary tissue types and give the general characteristics and functions of each one.

The four types of tissue are epithelial, connective, nervous, and muscular. Epithelial covers the body and hollow organs and protects surfaces from damage, controls permeability, and produces gland cells. Connective tissue is found in every organ and is very diverse. It has many functions such as connecting structures such as tendons, providing support and locomotion for bones, storing, insulating, transporting, and protecting. Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal chord, and nerves and mainly produces action. Muscle tissue is classified based on what structures it supports and contracts and stretches for bodily processes such as your heart pumping blood.

2. How are epithelial tissues classified?

Epithelial tissue is classified by the number of layers of cells it contains and by the shape of its cells. The three types of epithelial tissue based on number of layers is simple, stratified, and pseudostratified. The three types of epithelial tissue based on the shape of cells is squamous, cuboidal, and columnar.

3. How does the type of epithelial tissue relate to its function? Give at least 1 example of where you would find each type of epithelial tissue.

Simple squamous epithelium is a single layer of extremely flat cells so that diffusion and filtration are more efficient. It is found in the lining of the heart. Simple cuboidal epithelium is a single layer of cube-shaped cells with large nuclei. Their functions are secretion and absorption in various organs such as the kidney. Simple columnar epithelium is a single layer of tall, narrow cells. The functions include movement of particles and secretion and absorption of gastric and intestine juices. The are found in the bronchioles of lungs and stomach. Pseudostratified columnar epithelium is a single layer of cells with different heights...
