Introduction

The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate the theory of listening skills and empathy, which are performed in a health assessment interview between a student nurse, and a student playing the part of a patient for the purpose of treatment. This analysis encloses examples from the recording of the interview that relates to listening skills and empathy theory. The examples will be analysed based on the two theories throughout the body of this assignment. The following is the recommendations for future improvement. Analysis

Listening is a procedure that requires the person to receive, conceive and construe the received information (Stein-Parbury, 2009, p.112). When a person listens to another he or she will receive the messages and understand the meaning of the messages then interpret them. Once the messages have been analysed the response to action will take place and effective listening has been performed. As a result, listening is a process that is demonstrated step-by-step to make the messages perceived.

Nurses have an opportunity to obtain information about patients by listening them besides, nurses can accumulate data and understand patients thoroughly (Stein-Parbury, 2009, p.112). Most patients who experience illness symptoms develop an explanatory representation. They might desire to disclose their ideas, concerns and expectations about their symptoms. Therefore, listening skills are important for recognising and exploring patients’ issues. In particular, the messages and information that are expressed by the patient is important to be recognised by health care professionals. The messages and information could be their feelings, concerns, worries, or personal stories that may link the patient with medical conditions or risks.
