Factors that advanced the Home Rule cause 1880-1914

There are many factors that contributed to the advancement of Home Rule between 1880 and 1914 include Gladstone (British Prime Minister), Parnell, Asquith and Redmond. Out of all these leaders, it can be concluded that Parnell advanced this cause the most; however, other individual leaders did help, such as Gladstone, who was a very motivated character due to his belief in his Divine Provenance, political opportunity and Parnell’s influence over his goals. It can also been seen that his is an influential character, as he managed to convert the Liberal party to permanently support Home Rule Act, eventually creating the Home Rule Act of 1914. His first Home Rule Bill of 1986 managed to split the Liberal Party; however Gladstone continued to create several other Bills in 1893 that contributed to Parnell’s success in the long run. Another leader that also advanced the Home Rule cause was Redmond, who managed to reunite the influential I.P.P in 1900, which led to him encouraging voting for the I.P.P. and Liberal Party in 1910, which created parliamentary reform, and even though Redmond managed great success, he was not an inspirational leader, as Key says that “Home Rule was psychologically a great political victory for Redmond.” The last leader, Asquith, as well as the Liberal Party, managed to push and pass the Parliament Act of 1911 as well as the Home Rule Act of 1914, showing that he was a very influential Prime Minister in his time in government. In conclusion, whilst other Leaders played their part in advancing the Home Rule cause between 1880 to 1914, it can be seen that Parnell created the most important and long-lasting change , as he managed to create a unified party, as the I.P.P., within parliament that had power, creating such helpful acts to advancing his cause such as the Ashbourne Act, as well as the First Home Rule Bill of 1886.
