“The Vietnam War is one of many dark chapters the U.S has been through since becoming a country.”

Many Americans know that the U.S has never lost a war except for one, one war that many see as a war that America should have never entered. Although, they entered for a reasonable reason, the outcome for the U.S was not a good one and the entire public was against President Lyndon B Johnson for joining The Vietnam War. The Vietnam War is one of many dark chapters the U.S has been through since becoming a country.

From 1959 to 1975 South Vietnam and North Vietnam had been in war, with the North trying to spread communism to the South. It wasn’t until 1965 when the U.S entered the war and did not stop fighting until 1973. “In August 1964, a US warship was attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats in the Gulf of Tonkin. Following this attack, Congress passed the Southeast Asia Resolution which allowed President Lyndon Johnson to conduct military operations in the region without a declaration of war. On March 2, 1965, US aircraft began bombing targets in Vietnam and the first troops arrived” (Hickman). The United States joined the war in support of the South because they did not want to see communism spread. However, the way America did this was not the best tactics available. “Somehow in order to save Vietnam we had to destroy it. Civilian casualties from U.S. actions ran from 100,000 in 1965 up to 300,000 in 1968, just from bombing and artillery. In addition, millions upon millions of gallons of herbicides were sprayed over 6 million acres of land. We bombed hospitals to save orphans, we sprayed Agent Orange and destroyed the land in order to save crops, and we burned hamlets to save villages and turned Vietnam into a huge whorehouse in order to save Vietnam from Communism” (Romo). These numbers represent one of the many reasons why it has tainted America in a bad way.
