Case Study 1

There are five essential points in securing the health of houses:--

1. Pure air.

2. Pure water.

3. Efficient drainage.

4. Cleanliness.

5. Light.

Without these, no house can be healthy. And it will be unhealthy just in proportion as they are deficient. (Nigtingale1859). Florence Nightingale would have immediately begun by instructing Isabel on the elements of securing health with in a house. Nightingale would certainly address the filth and messy disaster around the children. The home health nurse at this point would be wise to offer to hold the infant, which she would begin by washing her hands, and then observing the infants condition of cleanliness. The nurse would then ask Isabel what she was going to get to drink. This is important in assessing the new mother’s mental state. If she wanted water or a soda this would be a better choice than an alcoholic beverage such as whiskey or beer. Jerry the little boy should also be asked to help in caring for Pearl, on the level he could potentially understand. The nurse here has the opportunity to be a role model for Isabel, teaching by example and helping at the same time.

Priority for Isabel and the children is education for Isabel. Nurses must in a situation like this teach as to not be needed any more. Isabel needs to understand the impact of her actions on the children, how the temperature in the room, the cat litter, the cat, the spoiled food and milk may be breeding grounds for infection. “We must not forget what, in ordinary language, is called "Infection;"[4]--a thing of which people are generally so afraid that they frequently follow the very practice in regard to it which they ought to avoid.” (Nigtingale1859).
