I have to say that I found the reading for the week especially interesting and informative. I’ve taken the Learning Styles self assessment test before but have never taken the opportunity to analyze the results as they relate to my personal and workplace experiences.

After completing the exercise I gathered that, like many, I am a combination of all three styles of learning; Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic. However, I scored the highest for the Visual Learner. DuBrin described the preferences of visual learners as “graphics, demonstrations, and videos or DVDs over written information”. (DuBrin, 2007, p.49) DuBrin was right on point as it described my learning personality. I do prefer using images, pictures and colors to organize information and communicate with others. I can easily visualize objects, plans and results in my mind. I can easily find my way around using maps, and I rarely get lost. A good example of how I exhibit this quality is when I am on an elevator. Unlike my sister, I do not have to think about it, I automatically know which way to turn when it is time to exist the elevator. I also find that I create a mental picture in my mind for most everything. I thought about how this quality reflects itself for me secularly and I came up with the following example: I was asked to create a system that tracks important dates that were not necessarily related to business – Anniversaries, the birth of babies, birthdates etc. The form that I came up with is very colorful and bright and still in use to this date. My team has commented on how this brightens their day and lightens the mood.

Being a visual learning has also manifested itself in my workplace. I am responsible for managing a very large budget for the Marketing Department in Oncology at Novartis Pharmaceuticals. There was an issue late last year with my team...
