Background:

The juvenile justice system if traced back to nineteenth century i.e. under English common law along with American colonial law does not take in to account the differences among the minors and the adults with regard to the criminal behaviors and sanctions. Mostly juvenile i.e. children under age of 18 years were heard and punished accordingly in the adult’s court and system. The child offenders are also jailed with the adults who are not considered as right in the new system. In the United States, between 1825 and 1899 reforms were created regarding the juvenile justice system and the criminal law system. After the reforms the children were regarded as sinners but rather like immature, impressionable along with developing individuals which are not compatible like adults. The reforms were progressed and depicted that child should be treated as an individual and much differently than an adult. It is suggested that child have to be nurtured and educated to develop them as productive citizens and should be kept away from adult criminals as those adult criminals will mould him as hardened recidivists. The juvenile justice system plan is discussed below in detail which will reform the system already in process and was traditionally implemented.

Prevention:

* The Office of Prevention and Victim Services is the first service component on the Department’s continuum of services. Our goal is to intervene early in the lives of at-risk youth and decrease the chance of juvenile arrest and recidivism.
